Dabo Swinney makes shocking statement: 'Most guys in the transfer portal aren't good enough for Clemson'
Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports

Dabo Swinney is back at it again. The king of downplaying the importance of adding talent through the transfer portal has made numerous comments about how acquiring players in college football's version of free agency. On Thursday, he took things a step further when asked why the Clemson Tigers transfer portal efforts have been essentially nil.

Dabo Swinney's Transfer Portal Comments

On College Sports on Sirius XM radio, Swinney said, "I mean, it’s really pretty simple. Most of the guys in the portal aren’t good enough to play for us. That’s just the reality of it.”

He made headlines earlier this week for claiming that "every player is technically a transfer," mocking the new process that has allowed collegiate athletes to move about schools easily without having to sit out a year. These clownish comments come on the tail-end of a brutal season for the Tigers, who went 4-4 in ACC play and failed to reach 10 wins for the first time since 2010.

Clemson's NFL pipeline has all but dried up in recent years, and the bottom of the roster is also bleak. He can't have his cake and eat it, too, as the walk-ons he's taken on won't positively impact the team on game day. Sorry, Dabo, but talent matters more than anything in sports, and the margin for error with the explosion of the transfer portal and NIL is leaving the Tigers in the dust.

Clemson will never be among the big spenders in the country, but they should be actively looking to replace some of the 13 players who entered the portal. They saw Andrew Mukuba bolt for Texas earlier this offseason, but the Tigers have taken in only one addition via the portal over the last two cycles.

The time is almost too late for Swinney to add significant talent for this coming season. The backfield tandem of QB Cade Klubnik and RB Phil Mafah faces tremendous pressure to lead the offense and overcome a defense that has replaced significant talent.

If Swinney can't step up this fall, expect the whispers to get louder, as he's already been viewed as someone who could be out at Clemson sooner than later. Time will tell if it's his decision or not.
